Our school was clad in a sea of orange shirts, hoodies, sweaters and accessories on September 30 as we recognized the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. The path to reconciliation begins with each of us, and it is imperative that we listen carefully and with purpose to the realities faced by our Indigenous and First Nations people who were placed in Residential Schools. Through education, especially the education of our children, we hope to be able to accept the truth and to move toward reconciliation.
Our students participated in many activities on National Truth and Reconciliation day and heard about the importance of respecting all people regardless of the differences which may exist. They learned about the dignity which rests in all of us and how critical it is to ensure through our efforts that we recognize and celebrate the many gifts which each of us possesses. Mostly, they learned how important it is to recognize that the healing process is vital in the celebration of all humanity. Every child matters.
